For Yoga teachers and health professionals 

The Yoga for the Special Child® Part 1 – Online comprehensive training program provides the essential tools for working with children with special needs. Using hands-on instruction, Renata Sumar Gaertner guides program participants through each stage of the special child’s development. Topics include how to evaluate infants and children, how to create the optimum home environment, and how to work with specific syndromes and disorders.

The Part 1 curriculum includes:

  • Specific techniques for evaluating infants and children up to 3 years of age
  • The different components of interacting and bonding with infants/children
  • The components of Yoga for infants and children with special needs
  • The description of the physiological/psychological benefits
  • The four stages of development:
  1. Preparatory Stage (birth–6 months)
  2. Inductive Stage (6 months–1 year)
  3. Interactive Stage (1–2 years)
  4. Imitative Stage (2–3 years) 
  • Specific techniques for evaluating and working with kids 3–12 years old
  • Videos and/or demonstration of working with children of different ages
  • Contra-indications
  • Relaxation techniques

Yoga for the Special Child training online programs offer a unique learning environment for children and their parents, special education teachers, Yoga teachers, and health care professionals. This online course is taught by Renata Sumar Gaertner, the daughter of the internationally renowned Yoga therapist and author Sonia Sumar, whose innovative teaching methods have been improving the lives of children with special needs for more than 30 years.

Live sessions on Fridays at 1–4 pm, Saturdays and Sundays at 8:30–11:30 am and 2–5 pm EST.

Continuing Education (CE) Opportunities

Continuing Education Programs are offered in a variety of topics to supplement and enhance the skills and knowledge gained from the Certification Program. Yoga for the Special Child is an approved Continuing Education provider for AOTA, IAYT, and Yoga Alliance.

  • Yoga Alliance (YA): Approximately 48 contact hours.
    You can input your contact hours using your YA login information.
  • Integral Yoga 300-hour: 48 hours towards RYT 500 designation
  • Yoga Therapy: This is one of the elective modules to become certified as an Integral Yoga Therapist
  • International Association of Yoga Therapists (IAYT): Approved Professional Development (APD) course eligible for IAYT continuing education credits. (It is the students’ responsibility to request a certificate of completion and submit all required documents, hours, syllabus, etc. on the IAYT website.)

The
95-hour Certification Program consists of Yoga for the Special Child Part 1 and Yoga for the Special Child Part 2. Upon completion of both Part 1 and Part 2, participants will receive a certificate for 95 contact hours of training and become eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as RCYT. With the 95-hour certification, graduates are qualified to teach Yoga to children with special needs and to apply for a Yoga for the Special Child Practitioner License.
