Adaptive Yoga Teacher Training
August 25, 2017 – September 3, 2017
Greetings of Peace from Yogaville!
Thank you for your interest in our Adaptive Yoga Teacher Training. For more than forty years, students from all over the world have come to participate in our residential training programs. This letter contains the program’s curriculum and daily schedule, as well as information about accommodations and an application form.
If you have any questions or need more information after reading this material, feel free to contact us.
Adaptive Yoga Teacher Training Certification program is a 10-day course that teaches one to adapt the Integral Yoga practices to meet the needs of any individual.
We will look into the essential benefits of each asana and yoga practice to determine how to best implement these practices without strain, regardless of one’s physical, mental or emotional condition. Poses and practices will be adapted to sitting on the floor or a chair, lying down, and standing with and without support.
What Makes Integral Yoga Unique?
Integral Yoga is a complete science that cultivates and maintains the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health of the individual. The non-competitive approach and meditative exploration of the Integral Yoga practices create an indrawn awareness that allows each student to reconnect with deeper and more subtle aspects of being.
Our comprehensive certification programs provide a strong foundation for personal and spiritual development, an appreciation for nurturing a personal practice, and the skills to become a knowledgeable and professional Yoga teacher. The Integral Yoga training process fosters the teacher’s sensitivities to help them create a safe environment for their students that allows them to realize their potential, enhance self-respect, and learn to be of greater service to others.
Why A Residential Program?
The most effective teaching comes from direct experience. Our residential programs are designed to offer you the experience of living the teachings of Yoga and to present the necessary tools that will enable you to pass these great teachings on to others.
During your stay, you will immerse yourself in the yogic lifestyle and transform your body, mind, and spirit. Our residential programs offer a supportive and nurturing environment for practice and study away from the distractions of everyday life.
The program begins on August 25, 2017, starting with registration at 4 pm and ends after Hatha class at 9 am on September 3, 2017.
The daily schedule is very full; it is designed to help you fully realize the benefits of the Yoga practices and provide the optimum environment for studying and learning. Each day begins with meditation at 6 am, followed by a Hatha Yoga class. During the day, you will have training courses, workshops, practice sessions, a noon meditation at the beautiful LOTUS Temple, and some free time. This schedule covers six days and five nights a week. You are expected to stay at the Ashram for the entire time to successfully complete the program.
The curriculum includes the following:
- Adaptation of asanas
- Modifications: how to safely and effectively modify specific asanas to meet the needs and abilities of the student
- When to substitute an alternative pose that has an equivalent benefit
- Chair Yoga: a complete sequence of poses performed in chairs. (Chair Yoga is helpful for students with limited mobility and in situations where floor space is not available, such as offices, schools and senior centers.)
- Warm-Ups: gentle joint mobilization techniques and stretches to prepare the body for the asanas
- Use of Props: how and when to use props to safely enhance or support a pose
- Strategies for introducing the more subtle aspects of Yoga practices such as meditation, chanting, deep relaxation, and yoga nidra
Time to deepen your own practice through daily meditations (two per day) and Hatha Yoga classes
Satya Greenstone, E-RYT 500, has been a student of Sri Swami Satchidananda for over forty years. Throughout this time she has shared the Teachings of Integral Yoga in many diverse settings with students of all ages and backgrounds.
In 1978, she and her husband started the Yogaville Vidyalayam (“Temple of Learning”) an elementary school for the Ashram’s community children. They taught for seventeen years, using a full academic curriculum based on the principles and teachings of Yoga.
Since 1999, she has been a primary teacher for the Basic Yoga Teacher Training Program. While serving as Teacher Training Coordinator, she helped to develop and teach the first Gentle Yoga Teacher Training Program. In 2005 she received certification in Therapeutic Yoga. She has developed and taught the Integral Yoga Teaching Training Programs for adaptive Yoga and restorative Yoga. She gently adapts Yoga practices to meet individual needs, always finding a way encourage and inspire the students.
The course is available to all certified Integral Yoga teachers with teaching experience. Yoga teachers trained in other traditions with a minimum of six months teaching experience are also welcome. We recommend that all teachers not trained through Integral Yoga familiarize themselves with the Integral Yoga method of teaching Hatha Yoga by taking at least 10 classes at an Integral Yoga Institute or from an IY teacher. (Locations of IY Institutes, teaching centers and teachers are available from the IY Teachers Association at www.iyta.org or 434-969-3121 ext. 177.) If you are unable to find an IY teacher near you, you may come to the Ashram three days before the program to familiarize yourself with Integral Yoga before the program begins. You may also practice Integral Yoga Hatha with the DVD, Yoga With A Master, or the CD, Integral Yoga Hatha I (2013 version, 2 CD-set), available from IY Distribution at 1-800-262-1008 (outside US call 1-434-969-1049), or Shakticom at shakticom.org. Also recommended is the CD or audiotape Guided Relaxation by Sri Swami Satchidananda.
At the end of the course, graduates receive a diploma certifying them to teach Adaptive Hatha Yoga. Integral Yoga is a registered school of the Yoga Alliance, a voluntary alliance of organizations and teachers dedicated to uphold the integrity of Yoga, establish voluntary national standards for Yoga teachers, and provide support for the Yoga professional in the United States.
Integral Yoga may award 104 hours towards Yoga Alliance registration with the completion of this course.
Attendance is required for all sessions—from the program orientation on the first day through the coursework on the last day. This includes all morning and afternoon practices of Hatha Yoga and meditation.

Adaptive Yoga gives us the tools to reach various populations that may not have had access to the benefits of Hatha Yoga. In addition to Yoga studios, adaptive Yoga classes can be offered in senior centers, rehabilitation facilities, recreation centers, hospitals, churches, and community centers.
An Adaptive Yoga class provides all the benefits of the basic Integral Yoga Class at the level that the individual student is capable of practicing. You will learn to create safe, comfortable Yoga sessions for all of your students. Teaching techniques learned in this training will give you more options for accommodating people with limited mobility, students in private classes, and various levels in group classes.
